Of course, it's not Lionel's first Oxford doctorate. For me, his first had a double edged effect, as I tended to assume that's what a D.Phil./Ph.D. should be like, which sets a rather high standard for anyone else submitting for one. Peter Birks used to say he was the best D.Phil. student he ever had (although, to be fair, he said that about several others too). But those who knew Peter will know how pleased he would have been at this news and how sorry he would be not still to be, as the Regius Professor of Civil Law, the one responsible for presenting Lionel at the conferment of the degree. Otherwise, in a sense, the news is unremarkable, the award being so obviously deserved.

Betreff: [RDG] Congratulations!

Dear Colleagues:

With apologies for cross-posting to both the RDG and ODG, I would like to congratulate RDG list-convenor Lionel Smith for his receipt from the University of Oxford of a higher doctorate, the Doctor of Civil Law (DCL). The DCL is an earned award that recognizes excellence in published scholarship.

The two independent judges concluded that Lionel’s work was of the absolute highest quality, substantial in scale, sustained over time, authoritative, and of global reach and international importance. Who could disagree?
